What’s the Biggest Fish We Might Catch?

Tampa Bay is a world-class destination for inshore fishing, and if you’re joining us at Bay to Bay Outfitters during late summer and early fall, you’re in for some exciting action. One of the most common questions we get is, “What’s the biggest fish we might catch?” The answer depends on the time of year, tides, and your willingness to chase the giants. But during this season, some of the biggest, hardest-fighting fish in the bay are actively feeding, and ready to test your skill and gear.
Giant Fish of Late Summer and Early Fall in Tampa Bay
The heavyweight champ of Tampa Bay in late summer and fall is the bull redfish. These massive reds can push past 40 inches and weigh over 30 pounds. They move to near shore waters to join the aggregate spawn. They move back to Tampa Bay in the fall months after spawning and are hungry and ready to eat. Tarpon, the “Silver King,” may also still be hanging around into early fall. Though the main tarpon run peaks earlier in the summer, late in the summer season, fish up to 150 pounds can still be found near channels and bridges.
Other big inshore species include snook, which can top 15 pounds and move to deeper waters after spawning, and jack crevalle, which may not be as prized on the table but are known for blistering runs and brute strength. Occasionally, anglers might hook into cobia, black drum, or even sharks — all of which can put up a serious fight.
A Variety of Fish Sizes (and Tactics)
Of course, Tampa Bay isn’t only about big bruisers. The bay holds a healthy population of spotted seatrout, flounder, mangrove snapper, and sheepshead, which range in size but offer fun for anglers of all experience levels. These species are often more plentiful and make for great table fare.
More species that you may fish for or see are permit, pompano, cobia, and bull sharks.
Depending on your target, we may use live bait like pilchards or pinfish, cut bait, or artificial lures. For big reds and snook, we often focus on flats during high tide, mangrove shorelines, or deep cuts near oyster bars. Tarpon and sharks might call for heavier tackle and anchoring near deepwater passes or bridge pilings. Regardless of what you’re targeting, Captain Ansley Watson tailors every trip based on conditions and your goals.
